Brecon Beacons National Park Overview

The Brecon Beacons National Park is one of Wales's most beautiful outdoor areas. Situated amongst hills and mountains, the park covers an area of 1344 sq km (520 sq miles) and stretches from the Welsh/English border to Llandeilo. The park includes the Black Mountains, the Brecon Beacons and Fforest Fawr, as well as moorland, forests, valleys, waterfalls, lakes, caves and gorges. Brecon Cathedral, in the town of Brecon, and Hay-on-Wye, with its annual book fair and many bookshops, are also popular tourist attractions. There are also numerous castles in the park, including Trecastle, Tretower, Bronllys and Morlais. The Brecon Beacons Mountain Center, which is located 9km (5.5 miles) southwest of Brecon, provides visitors with information on the park and offers a fine view of the surrounding area, including Pen y Fan and Corn Du peaks. Visitors can also take the Brecon Mountain Railway, which runs from near Merthyr Tydfil up into the park, and gives spectacular views across Wales.
