Nidaros Cathedral (Nidarosdomen) Overview
According to Norwegian history, King Olav Haraldsson, who was killed in the battle of Stiklestad in 1030 and who subsequently became Norway's patron saint several days later, was buried on the exact spot where Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim now stands. Construction of the church began in 1070 after pilgrims began to flock to St Olav's grave, but it was not completed until 1300, when it was widely reputed to be the most beautiful church in Norway. Now restored after fire damage and years of decay and pillage endured during the Reformation, it is particularly renowned for its fine stone statues on the exterior and the quality and quantity of stained glass in the Gothic interior. Norway's monarchs are still crowned and buried in the cathedral and there are regular music recitals under the high-vaulted arches. Visitors can admire the Crown Jewels on display and also climb the tower for fine views over Trondheim.
