Now this is Africa! This trip has you on safari in Kenya, taking in unbelievable wildlife in Lake Nakuru National Park, seeing wonderful natural attractions at Lake Naivasha, and visiting numerous villages and learning about the local communities while hiking in the Usumbara Mountains. Combine this with a couple final days on the Indian Ocean coast, and you a great East African experience!
Day 1 Arrive Nairobi
Arrive in Nairobi at any time.
Day 2-3 Nakuru (2B,L,2D)
Heading to Lake Nakuru, home to a million flamingoes and over 460 species of birds. Visit Menegai Crater for unbelievable views, enjoy the safari in search of black and white rhino, lion, buffalo, impala, thompson gazelle and warthog.
Day 4,5 Lake Naivasha (B)
Enjoy a safari walk to get close to giraffes and antelope, tour the flamingo-filled Green Crater Lake, and spot ibis, lovebirds, fish eagles, hippo, and the black and white colobus monkey on the banks of Lake Naivasha. Use your free time to bike through Hell's Gate National Park.
Day 6 Arusha
Journey south to Nairobi, and beyond to Arusha, Tanzania. Learn about the local culture at the Masai Museum, and visit the Meserani Snake Park, home to snakes, crocodiles, assorted reptiles and birds.
Day 7 Arusha
Enjoy Arusha on this free day. Optional activities include a full day trip Ngorongoro Crater and a chance to see the famous tree climbing lions at Lake Manyara National Park.
Day 8 Lushoto
Take a bus ride to Lushoto, your base for the Usumbara Mountains. Explore the town, visit with the friendly locals, and prepare for your trek in the mountains above the town.
Day 9-12 Usumbara Mountain Trek (4B,4L,3D)
Start your 4-day trek through the Tanzanian countryside and traditional villages - Lukozi, Rangwi, and Mtae - where you will have the chance to not only trek along the lush slopes of the Usumbara mountains and see some stunning landscape, but also learn about the local culture and have some great interaction with the villagers. We will hike through a series of hill-side villages, visit a soil conservation project, women's pottery groups, and even a traditional healer.
Day 13 Dar Es Salaam / Mikadi Beach
Continue to Tanzania's capital, Dar Es Salaam. Stay at the beach, which is only two kilometres from downtown, but feels like the middle of the African wilds.
Day 14 Dar Es Salaam / Mikadi Beach
Visit the National Museum or explore the fish market, or relax on the Indian Ocean beach.
Day 15 Depart Dar Es Salaam / Mikadi Beach
