Norway in a Nutshell The 'Norway in a Nutshell' package is an excursion combining train, boat and bus to provide the most comprehensive impression of Norway's magnificent scenery within one full day. The trip takes visitors by train to Voss through beautiful scenery and along lake shores. From Voss the trip continues by bus to Gudvangen via the high point at Stalheimskleiva, from where the views are incredible. Dropping down to the fjord, the narrow mountain road passes through dramatic scenery and past thundering waterfalls as the bus negotiates the tight hairpin bends. At Gudvangen
a boat is boarded for a scenic fjord cruise, passing through the narrowest arm of the beautiful Sognefjorden - the impressive and steep-sided Nærøyfjord - with occasional glimpses of remote farms along the way. On reaching the end of the fjord at the picturesque village of Flåm, the journey then continues by train aboard the Flåm Railway, which ascends an impossibly steep and winding track to the mountain station at Myrdal, with breathtaking views of snow-covered mountains, waterfalls and the valley far below. The train ride is considered to be one of the highlights of the journey. From here the train returns to Bergen or continues on to Oslo along the impressive Bergen Railway, Northern Europe's highest railway. Exposed to harsh changeable weather, the track requires skilled technical maintenance and great effort to keep it open. It is possible to break the journey and spend time in various places along the way, and it can be done in reverse depending on where it is started.
