Rock ClimbingBeing Australia's most mountainous state, Tasmania has plenty of rock for testing the muscles, from easy grade 10 to a 20 plus. Most places in Tasmania offer climbing and abseiling adventure trip companies and there are many experienced guides available. Those who want to test their abilities before tackling the real thing can try out the indoor climbing gyms in Hobart and Launceston. Some of the most popular climbing spots are Mount Wellington's Organ Pipes near Hobart, White Water Wall and the Hazards at Freycinet, the Cataract Gorge in Launceston and Frenchman's Cap in
the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage area.
CavingTasmania is renowned for its many limestone and dolomite caves, which offer a remarkable underground world just waiting to be explored. The less adventurous can visit the caves at Hastings, Mole Creek and Gunns Plains, which have been developed and fitted with easily accessible pathways, offering regular guided tours. Mole Creek has even been declared an underground national park to protect its fragile ecology. The more demanding wild caves are the domain of the many local "caverneering clubs" and professional guides who can be hired to reveal their wonders.
RaftingWith its mountainous terrain combined with a heavy rainfall, Tasmania boasts rugged whitewater rivers just waiting to host adventurous paddlers all year round. The best action is to be had on the wild Franklin River, but only the very fit and adventurous should take on the full multi-day descent. A shorter trip on the lower reaches of the river gives a milder, but still exciting, rafting experience. Other popular rafting rivers are the Picton, which is near Hobart and offers easy rapids, the Mersey, and the North and South Esk. Experienced commercial river rafting companies employ skilled guides and offer a variety of expeditions.
